Original Art
My Textile Art - Freemotion Embroidery
I produce very detailed artwork of wildlife, animals, and inanimate objects using only fabric and thread. Whilst not unique, it is quite a rare artistic medium. No paint, pens or pencils are used in the representation of the main subject matter. You need to look closely as people often find it hard to believe that nothing else is used in the subject’s representation.
The pieces are formed by first creating a template of the subject using various patterns of Liberty Lawn Cotton and/or Kaffe Fassett fabric, which is then adhered (applique´) to the main canvas.
With the main structure of the subject now in place the fine detail is applied (embroidered) by using a Janome sewing machine and very fine Aurifil Italian cotton thread. This embroidery is done freehand when using the sewing machine.
This technique is referred to as Free Motion Embroidery or Thread Painting.
I have now been creating pieces for about the last six years. It started as a hobby, but after having built up a body of work was given the opportunity to show at the Pilgrims Way Artists Exhibition at the Lenham Tythe Barn in 2021 and 2022. Exhibitions at Under the Rainbow (Bluewater) followed in 2022 and 2023, as well as the first Rochester Arts Fair at the Corn Exchange in October 2023.
In August 2023 I was a finalist in the David Shepherd Wildlife Foundation - Wildlife Artist of the Year Competition, exhibiting my piece “Going Nowhere Fast,” at the Mall Galleries in London.
